About Our Coalition & Mission

Salton Sea Conservation Coalition is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to protecting, restoring, and improving the Salton Sea and its surrounding habitats. Our federal Employer Identification Number (EIN) is 39-4136877. Our California charitable registration number is CT0304529. Our president is Juan Landeros.

Our mission brings together wildlife conservation, habitat restoration, environmental education, and community stewardship across the Salton Sea region, including the Coachella Valley. We want suitable habitat and feeding grounds for burrowing owls and other native wildlife to remain protected year after year.

Our work today centers on educational social media posts and reels, public outreach, and fundraising to develop conservation projects. We help people understand habitat loss and the importance of protecting wetlands and desert landscapes, and invite supporters to learn, share, and participate as opportunities develop.

Our planned priorities include rehabilitating the HQ Ponds at Sonny Bono Salton Sea National Wildlife Refuge and protecting dune habitat at Coachella Valley National Wildlife Refuge through fencing and invasive plant management. Both projects are awaiting funding. Their inclusion on this website describes our intended work, not completed restoration.

As resources become available, we aim to expand hands-on volunteer stewardship, monitoring, cleanups, educational materials and workshops, and arts and cultural programming. These are future goals rather than services currently available. We seek collaboration with federal, state, tribal, and local agencies and community organizations.
